Daycare meal preparation

Packing toddler mealtime essentials for daycare is easier when every item has a clear purpose, can be identified quickly and returns home for cleaning. Before sending personal feeding equipment, always check the individual centre’s policies and the educator’s instructions.

Toddler mealtime essentials for daycare

  • A clearly labelled lunch container or bag
  • A plate or bowl only if requested by the centre
  • Age-appropriate spoon and fork
  • A labelled cup or drink bottle permitted by the service
  • A clean bib if the centre requests one
  • Separate storage for used items
  • Written care or allergy information where required

Check the daycare policy before packing

Some Australian early learning services provide all plates and cutlery. Others ask families to send a cup, lunchbox, bib or complete feeding set. Confirm what is actually needed before purchasing duplicates.

Ask how used items are stored, whether educators rinse personal dinnerware, which cup styles are allowed and how everything must be labelled. Follow the service’s food, allergy and hygiene procedures rather than relying on a general packing list.

Choose items that are easy to identify

Label the outer storage container and any component the centre asks you to identify. Use the child’s name in the format requested by the service. Avoid placing a loose label where it could become a small detachable part or interfere with a food-contact surface.

Colour can help families recognise a set quickly, but it should not replace the centre’s required name label. Photograph the pieces being sent so it is easier to check that everything returns home.

Pack only the pieces needed that day

A complete set is useful at home, but the child may need only a bowl, spoon and cup for daycare. Packing fewer loose components reduces the chance of lids and utensils being misplaced.

If the centre allows personal dinnerware, select the plate or bowl according to the planned meal. A 12 cm bowl is practical for many snacks, while an 18 cm divided plate provides separate sections for a larger meal. Check the Toddler Plate Size Guide for exact measurements.

Two colours for easier family organisation

Choose Oat or Lavender, or use the Bear Duo when two coordinated sets make home and daycare rotation easier.

Use a separate container for used dinnerware

Used items should not be placed loose beside clean utensils, nappies or clothing. Pack a washable container or bag that closes securely and is clearly recognised as holding used meal equipment.

At home, remove food promptly, separate removable silicone and stainless steel components, wash them according to the care instructions and dry fully before repacking. Follow the complete stainless steel toddler plate cleaning routine.

Consider weight and durability

Daycare bags already carry clothing, bedding and personal items. Compare the weight and number of pieces being sent rather than packing an entire kitchen. Stainless steel offers a firm, durable eating surface without the breakability of ceramic, but every product still needs to be checked for damage before use.

Do not send a damaged plate, split silicone base, cracked lid or altered utensil. Contact the seller if a component no longer fits as intended.

Communicate food and allergy requirements clearly

Dinnerware does not manage allergies. Follow the centre’s documented process for food restrictions, medication and allergy plans. Do not rely on the colour of a lunchbox or plate to communicate a medical need.

Where the service requests written instructions, ensure they are current and consistent with advice from the child’s health professional. Speak directly with educators if the child needs help with textures, swallowing, positioning or specialised equipment.

Cups, lids and straws at daycare

Check which cups the service permits. Some centres may prefer an open cup, a particular drink bottle or a named straw cup. Send only the lid and straw components required and ensure staff know how they fit together.

The Bear Set handled cup holds 200 mL and includes two lid options. It should be assembled correctly and used under supervision. No cup should be described as completely spill-proof in every orientation.

Do not microwave stainless steel

Tell educators that any stainless steel component must stay out of the microwave. Food can be transferred to an approved microwave-safe container if reheating is required under the service’s procedure.

A simple night-before packing routine

  1. Check the daycare menu and the centre’s requirements.
  2. Select only the plate, bowl, cup and utensils needed.
  3. Inspect each item for damage and confirm it is clean and dry.
  4. Label and pack clean items separately from the container for used pieces.
  5. Add any required food, allergy or care documentation.
  6. On return, unpack the bag promptly and wash used components.

Frequently asked questions

Should I send a full feeding set to daycare?

Only if the service requests it. Many centres provide dinnerware, so confirm the requirements before packing.

Is stainless steel practical for daycare?

It is durable and easy to inspect, but suitability depends on the centre’s policy, the child’s needs and the particular product.

How do I stop daycare utensils getting lost?

Follow the service’s labelling policy, pack only the pieces needed and use a named container for all returned items.

Can daycare microwave a stainless steel plate?

No. Stainless steel must never go in a microwave.
